Music and the Chamber Orchestra of Secrets

Deep blow the stone floors of the Music Conservatory of Waltz and Warbling, something older than memory stirred. A scattering of dried bones cracked and crumbled to dust as they cascaded to the floor, as something shifted beneath the huge mound on which they were piled. And, so faint that no one outside the dusty cellar could perceive it, there came a sound. It was something like the light, tuneless twang of an aged violin.

    Beavo is now into: Industrial.

Examples That Are Good: Masochist and Her(t)z Frequenz by Die Form, 100% and A La Mode, A La Mort and Nurse Grenede by Angelspit, Marilyn Manson of course but everybody knows him, and my current favorite song is The Judged Ones by Grendel.

I get most of my new bands off of Real Synthetic Audio.

OAR was meh. the wailers were sweet though.

I’m not a huge fan of industrial. some of it’s great, it just isn’t something i would enjoy listening to a lot

It seems to be reggae week or something in columbus. not really sure what is with all the concerts with marleys or marley-friends

in other concert news, i’m missing the offspring w/dropkick murphys, which i am PISSED about but canada should be fun too i guess. i am for sure going to CD101 summerfest in august with matt & kim and a bunch of other bands they haven’t announced yet, the whores, and then kings of leon in september.

columbus needs some metal. all the metal shows are in cincy

I need some classical recommendations. And accessible metal recommendations for people not yet into metal… and music recommendations in general.

I’ve realized that I adore accordions when played in a non-cheesy fasion.

As for accessible metal… Try the new Skyclad. Or Steel Panther. Steel Panther might be fun.

Classical = Chopin and Stravinzky. I’m going to marry both of them.

      Metal Gateway Drug = Nightwish.
But old Nighwish. I have to pretend that Anette Nightwish is a different, inferior band.

I also like Handel’s Water Music Suite, and Mozart’s Flute Quartet in D.

Also, Paul Winter is nice if you’re looking for something really easy to listen to. He has an album called “Wintersong” which is really pretty, especially “Beautiful Star.”

17: Wtf. Dark Passion Play is the best Nightwish have ever done. And at least Anette sings in a style she can shine in. Tarja sounded like she took 2 months of classical training and then quit. “I can imitate an opera singer!” But you can’t sing like one. If I wanna hear opera, I’ll listen to it.

Classical: Brahms. Also Beethoven’s “Rage Over A Lost Penny” is sort of hilarious.

Opera is pretty good too, sometimes, when it’s not Wanger.

I listened to classical and only classical for the first twelve years of my life. I’m a tiny bit bored with it.

Metal gateway = prog. Ayreon, Dream Theater, Avantasia (although that’s prog/power.) Power and folk metal are also good — Masterplan, Edguy, Elvenking (listenlistenlisten, and don’t be put off by just one song — every album is different. Very different. But they’re all amazing.), Helloween, Gamma Ray, Sonata Arctica. Definitely Sonata Arctica. Also try Iron Maiden.

re: Tarja/Anette — I’m on the fence. I just generally don’t try to compare the two — the two eras are very different, and I like both. They’re just not comparable.

if you’re using Elvenking as a gateway, not The Scythe. start with The Winter Wake perhaps?
      (and echoing definitely Sonata.)

22: For me there’s absolutely no contest. Holopainen’s songwriting shines so much more whe Tarja isn’t hogging the emphasis spotlight. Whatever.

I’ve posted looong lists of good metal gateways before, browse through past threads or something… Anyway, usually power metal hooks people pretty well. Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Angra, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Iced Earth, the ones glasseh mentioned… Plus some more “obscure” bands:
    Stormwarrior
    Pyramaze
    Lost Horizon
    Cage
    Cryonic Temple
    Demon’s & Wizards
    Domine
    Dragonland
    Heavenly
    Iron Fire
    Manticora
    Sabaton
    Winter’s Bane

Aha, wonderful. I’ll have so much amazing music to check out and listen to over the summer! Actually, that was my problem over the past week… somebody gave me Arcade Fire and The Decemberists and some other stuff and so then I was like, “screw the regents, it’s time to listen to music”. And that will be my excuse when I discover my Math B grade. But I’ve heard very little of any of the metal, so this should be fabulous.

I love Chopin too , which could potentially be a problem if Pan loves him and Mel is going to marry him. Also, Saint-Saens, yesss.
I need to investigate more of Stravinzky, Paul Winter, Brahms and Holst.

If anyone has suggestions, i’d like some more classical voice, ska, or good (GOOD) rap or techno (both can be a little hard to find :P )

PS fridge nice list :D i don’t know if i’d call much of it metal, but i guess altrock and altmetal are fairly overlapping terms. whatever you call them, they’re good bands :P

re: the nightwish debate- i prefer tarja. yes, she’s overly dramatic and a little ridiculous but she is still a much better singer than annette (despite the fact that she’s kind of a bitch and her solo stuff kind of sucks). However if you’re looking at the band overall, i think Dark Passion Play is up there with their older stuff. Nightwish with Tarja seemed to have fallen off a bit towards the end.

Progressive Nation was on Friday. The venue was seated. :( It was worth going anyway, though. The first three bands (Scale the Summit, Bigelf, and Zappa Plays Zappa) weren’t amazing, although Bigelf was the best. Dream Theater was incredible — the atmosphere in the room suddenly jumped. The setlist was A Nightmare To Remember, A Rite of Passage, Scene Four: Beyond This Life, Erotomania, Voices, Solitary Shell, In the Name of God, and The Count of Tuscany was the encore. The only ones I didn’t know were Erotomania, Voices, and In the Name of God. I need to see them again in a general admission venue.

Scale the Summit was okay. Since all they do is instrumentals I think they would be better as between playlist songs on an ipod or something. The feeling in the room was of thumb twiddling, they/we were waiting for something better.

Bigelf was really good. They had a good stage presence. There were actually people in the venue for this band and the general feeling was hmm, pretty good. Would see again…

Zappa plays Zappa failed. Some of the first music I ever heard was Frank Zappa because my father would play music when he was making dinner. I regrettably didn’t recognize any of the songs. They didn’t have the vibe and the audience kind of sat there and waited. Dweezil has the Zappa charisma, he just wasn’t using it.:(

Dream Theater- “the atmosphere in the room suddenly jumped” exactly. They had the decency to play music I’d heard before :) and were really really amazing.

Venue- seated. The lack of a mosh pit was depressing but we lived.(I just realized that I’ve never been to a show that allowed moshing and had enough people the get a good pit going. eek) A security guard accused me of being a fighter (me? fight? you must be out of your mind! I only wear these so people don’t hurt me!). Apparently I have awesome boots?

Beavo- Listen to FS and go see slayer. Oh, and bring earplugs otherwise your head will explode.

    So. Wow. That was awesome.

Despite the fact that it was mostly nu metal and God Forbid went on and on and on and the guy couldn’t think of anything to get the crowd riled up about seeing a bad band except for “fuck youuuu!” “fuckin aaaa!” “you all are fuckin whores!”, my friends got a poster signed from As I Lay Dying, I think it was them anyways, Job for a Cowboy was great, we saw some of Whitechapel (meh), and there were a bunch of other bands that didn’t even play for some reason, like Cannibal Corpse (thank God) and Trivium (sadface).

Bullet played like four songs and then left. What. They were good songs (no Forever and Always! whywhywhy) but still. It was a really short playlist. Killswitch Engage was pretty good, I’ll have to look back into them. They knew how to rock the crowd. Unfortunately, the crowd didn’t really know how to rock. The mosh pits kind of looked like a crazy ring around the rosy.

So I stayed for Slayer. Yes I did. Um, it was…loud? You couldn’t really tell the difference between the guy singing screaming and the drums, and you couldn’t really hear either the guitar or base. Their performance was awesome, despite the fact that the music sucked. The crowd was wild at the first song and then kind of went to sleep for the next billion (it was too much, almost every song sounded exactly the same). I taped it on my phone anyways, without sound.

Manson. Marilyn Manson is in my top five bands. He was fucking amazing. Even the songs he played that I didn’t like were amazing. And everything went into the crowd. The beer (beer?) he gurgled, the towel, the American flag and army helmet, the Bible he threw around, and his hat during The Dope Show. Nothing from the Golden Age of Grotesque, though, which made me sad.

Whoever set this thing up was an ass. It should have been Slayer first to start everyone off so they’d get all pumped (seriously, they were asleep by Slayer), then Killswitch, then Bullet, then Manson.

    I got sunburn. :)

Wait, wait, wait. So you were glad that Cannibal Corpse didn’t play, but disappointed that the wimpy turds of boredom that are Trivium didn’t play? Get your priorities straight. And you never start the show with the headliner, and Slayer are fucking huge. I’m not a fan (I own Reign In Blood because it’s a thrash metal classic that everyone should know, and that’s it) but historically and influence-wise Slayer were the biggest band in that festival.

But yeah, I’ve heard other shitty reports about the Mayhem festival. Most of them are “Wait, I thought it was Mayhem headlining! Ripoff!”

I really, really, really don’t like Cannibal Corpse. Except for Kill, duh.

Could somebody please explain to me why Slayer is fucking huge and why I should care? I don’t like them, and when I don’t like something I don’t bother listening to their music. Right? Or is there something I’m missing? The performance wasn’t even that great. Maybe it was a bad day or something, but other than the fact that they’re really really big and everybody’s heard of them why I should listen to them.

Historical and influential importance, more than anything. I guess you had to be around in the 80s when Angel of Death (still a fucking great song) was the heaviest thing around and it was a huge creative revolution. Fuck Metallica, Slayer were amazingly heavy for a thrash band. This was when Bon Jovi was topping charts.

That was pretty awesome too. Find Leeds United or Guitar Hero to embrace the awesomeness. Watch the Oasis video for the full Amanda effect. Or the Backstabber video that’s on the DD official site. Lordi sound nothing like Gwar. Don’t compare them just because they both wear costumes. Lordi play melodic hard rock, Gwar play comedic, vulgar stage metal combining thrash and hardcore.

Also, Mozart operas aren’t that great. De Zauberflote (sorry, I can’t spell in German, it means the Magic Flute) is pretty good. Evil villainesses hitting fourth registers are pretty awesome.

So I guess I’m kind of late to the party, but you ska likers should listen to the Toasters. And the Slackers. And the English Beat. (Otherwise known as the Beat if you live in England.)

Neil Young is boss. I feel like you could listen to him for decades and still get something new out of it.

Anyone ever seen the Melvins live? I’m thinking of going. And I’m definitely seeing TMBG if I can find someone to go with.

so i got the tryout music for symphonic band at OSU. there is some harrrrd stuff there. like, lip trills? for serious? i suck at those. and 32nd notes are a pain. >.<

so i don't know if i'll make it. i do have a month to practice though. anyway, if i don't make it this time they re-audition spring quarter, and then winter and spring every year afterwards so i'll have plenty of chances

in other, even sadder news, summerfest is sold out and i'm pissed. i am terrible at remembering to get tickets in advance, but this is the one concert that i never needed to do that for. but it is an awesome lineup unlike the last few years so i guess a lot of people wanted to go. amy and i are planning on sitting in a basement somewhere listening to matt&kim and crying because we're missing it :(

Decent ramblings too, but I haven’t watched too much of his stuff.

I don’t even know whether I’m doing music or not next year in school… they have a pretty good program, but it’s nothing compared to the orchestra I was in previously and there’s no room in my schedule for band. So I’ll probably just do percussion lessons and beg for a private composition/theory lesson. *sigh*

I’m going to see a couple of my friends at marching and practice. Our county’s band program is pretty awesome, and our sports teams suck, so instead of a football game it’s like, a marching band thing, with a little bit of football that nobody’s watching. I kinda sorta miss band, but not really.

Listening to- Coheed & Cambria. :)

The music discussion on the MB is actually pretty good right now. Yay. I really need to search some more bands. How come the same indie bands get mentioned? It seems like there’s only, like, ten that everyone likes.

well there’s indie, and then there’s indie. like sometimes i’ll listen to local bands that nobody has ever heard of, and there are plenty of those. but i wouldn’t imagine that it’s terribly easy to become well-known as an indie band, so there may just be less of them that are nationally (or internationally, or even regionally) recognized

but i am by no means the expert, and actually have been known to run away in fear from really hardcore indie fans (they can be scary!!!)

I listen to so many different genres that I can’t become “hardcore” in any of them, except metal, which is and will always remain THE most interesting genre ever. So I absorb the movers and shakers from all genres and absorb what’s good about it. So I understand indie.

If you’re going to name one death metal band, Deicide is really the only one of those that comes close to deserving it, IMO. Death would be a good choice. Wait, I just read it and they put death–heh, in that case I would agree with deicide. Actually that was an oddly informed article, considering what things on the internet generally are.

They get no radio coverage where I live, so I’m not subjected to over-saturation. I’d probably hate them too if that was the case. As far as songwriting goes they’re actually really good, and the guy’s voice has a pleasant sleaze to it. Not the “best band EVAR” or anything, but still, enjoyable. Ticket’s only 55 francs, so no biggie.

voltaire was fucking awesome as well. he is so adorable! we had a legitimate conversation with him afterwards it was great. also a group hug :D

my only regret is that he didn’t play goodnight demonslayer. but he played a dresden dolls parody that i’ve never heard that i think might be new…coin-operated goy, it was hilarious. and he did tell one cute story about his son (how his son wanted to go to mexico on november 2nd because it’s after day of the dead so there would be free toys lying around)

there were two openers. we got a pic with the first one, they were really good! they had a kickass bassist and it was an upright electric which just makes it so much better. i forget what they were called though. and then there was hellblinki who also backed up voltaire on a lot of his songs, they were fun. the girl is amazing, she has a great voice and plays accordion which is pretty badass. the guy is occasionally annoying, but generally funny (and then there’s the bassist who didn’t do much but was fairly good)

Having some issues finding enough time to upload, but I’m working on it. In the meantime, though, anyone interested in the following should let it be known:

Julian Casablancas – “Phrazes For The Young” (Strokes’ singer’s solo album)
    The Almost – “Monster Monster”
Stone Roses – “The Stone Roses”
Stone Roses – “The Very Best Of”
Nickel Eye – “The Time Of The Assassins” (Strokes’ bassist’s solo album)
    Say Anything – “Say Anything”
Snow Patrol – “Up To Now”
Dashboard Confessional – “Alter The Ending”

Kay, whatever, thanks. :) Those were the answers I was expecting. But I tend to assume stupid things, so I asked anyway.

I might end up going to a Korpiklaani concert. I haven’t even listened to a lot of their stuff but it sounds okay, I guess. A friend is trying to get a bunch of people together to go, and why not? I saw a video from them and it was a bunch of guys in stupid clothes tearing apart chicken with their teeth and fighting, so I don’t think they’re really… my type? But, yeah.

Also, Emilie Autumn came to DC and I COULDN’T GO. I had the money, I had the permission, and I COULDN’T FUCKING GET A RIDE. My friend who could have taken me chose between Emilie Autumn and Drop Dead Gorgeous and chose DDG. Oh, my GOD. I need to start hanging out with cooler people.

Sorry for the exesive use of capital letters.
