4: Exactly! Although currently the dubious honour of “best penalty faker” goes to Cristiano Ronaldo, arrogant portugues asshole and striker for both Portugal and Manchester United. The guy gets brushed, falls down, and five seconds later starts groaning and grasping his shin. Fucker.

Spain beat Germany 1-0 in a boring final match, both teams played well, but Germany was sleeping, allowing Torres to sneak in a goal.

Dammit, Spain missed a lot of chances for a goal. But they won any way.

Michael Phelps = Superman

I haven’t been watching the Olympics. Saw the womens’ individual saber final matches, which was cool, and was planning to follow online until I found out NBC’s website required Windows/Mac to run and would block me unless I pretended that I was on one of those. Now I’m ignoring them on principle.

Michael Phelps, holy crap. Usain Bolt, holy crap. Guo Jinjing, holy crap.
And the 41-year-old swimmer (Dara Torres?) and the 33-yr-old gymnast (no idea on name, but is Russian competing for Germany) are my heroes.

I do wish NBC had shown something fun like water polo or soccer instead of all the beach volleyball matches, though.

i saw some of the gymnastics last night. what does everybody think about the crazy chinese training? (starting when they’re mini, putting them in before they’re 16, etc)

Lizzie | August 19, 2008 at 8:45 am
At least two of the Chinese girls certainly don’t look like they’re 16.. One of them, He Something, looks about 12..

15-yeah, my mom saw her and was like “do they not FEED these people? that’s ridiculous if she’s 16, look she’s not developed at all! that is so unhealthy” etc etc
yes my mom says things like “developed” instead of “has boobs”

I think one of the gymnasts was 10. Not sure. Maybe 11 or 12.
But, y’know, if they’re that good, at that age, why not let them compete? As long as they’re willing and not being treated badly or anything, from what I recall as gymnasts age they get worse (reeeeeally wears down the body/bones).

Fortune Cell | August 19, 2008 at 8:26 pm
It gives them an unfair advantage. Younger girls are better – they have less performance anxiety and are smaller.

Since China is such a huge country, they can basically pick the girls who have talent at age 3-4, then go change their birth certificates, just so they’re prepared if they ever get good enough to make it to the Olympics.

As per Julia’s suggestion, I am moving fencing discussion here…
so, I actually got to fence at practice today! ’twas fun. We have three foilists now (including me).

tetracontakaidigon | November 18, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Before fencing practice, I am glad to be in fencing and to be friends with all of these amazing people in fencing, and we are talking and laughing and plotting.
At the beginning of fencing practice, I wonder why I ever wanted to join this team when I am obviously incapable of anything required. This is when we are running laps around the school. It then fades into a blankness of mind and determination while we warm up and begin.
At the end of practice, we are done with jumping in circles or drills or whatever, and are going in short bouts against one another, and I am having fun poking people with things.
My electric epee came today and I am happy, even though the concept of electric weaponry is not as awesome as it sounds. It makes a light go on in a box when you hit someone. It doesn’t electrocute them.
There are seven epeeists (that would look less weird with the accent mark over the second e), three of them female, and an eighth guy is coming in a week.

I tried fencing once. It was fast, but fun. Do you practice at home?
I sail. Lots.
23.
tetracontakaidigon | November 19, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I should, but I don’t practice anywhere else. I don’t have time after school with all the fencing in school, and right now for example it hurts to move and I am not enthusiastic about fencing more. I leave all my gear at school whenever I can, too.

Pan | November 23, 2008 at 5:27 pm
I fenced a few years ago, but then stopped because the people with whom I fenced basically said that if you weren’t aspiring to be an olympic fencer, you were worthless and lazy.
22- Yay, sailing! *high-fives fellow sailor*
